How Much Does It Cost?

The cost of registering your vehicle with Spanish number plates involves several factors and can vary depending on the region in Spain due to differing tax levies. Generally, the cost is influenced by the vehicle's value and its CO2 emissions.

Calculating Import Duty / Registration Tax

The registration tax for importing a vehicle in Spain ranges from 0% to 15.9% of the vehicle's value. This percentage is determined by both the value of the vehicle and its CO2 emissions. Typically, lower vehicle values and reduced CO2 emissions will result in lower import duty.

Importance of Accurate Payment

It is crucial to ensure that all applicable taxes are accurately paid when importing your vehicle. We have encountered cases where clients, attracted by lower prices from other services, were later fined by Spanish authorities for failing to pay the correct taxes. This often resulted in higher overall costs, including the original shortfall on the import duty.

Additional Taxes and Fees

In addition to the import duty, there are several other smaller taxes and fees associated with the registration process. These can vary slightly depending on your specific region and may include fees to the local town hall (ayuntamiento) and the local traffic department (Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico).

Permanent Plates - ITV Test

To obtain permanent Spanish number plates, your vehicle must pass an ITV test (Inspección Técnica de Vehículos), similar to the MOT test in the UK, but more thorough for imported vehicles. If the car is coming from a non-EU country, a Certificate of Conformity (homologación) is also required. Should your vehicle not pass the test initially, you have one month to address the issues and return for a free re-test.
