Registering a Historic Vehicle

In Spain, a vehicle is considered historic or classic if it is at least 30 years old or deemed of special cultural interest. To qualify, the vehicle must be in its original state, meaning it should not have undergone substantial modifications and must be maintained in a condition consistent with its original design and manufacture.

Benefits of Owning a Historic Vehicle

Owning a historic vehicle in Spain offers several advantages:

  • Insurance: Historic vehicles often enjoy cheaper insurance premiums. However, there may be limits on the number of kilometers you can drive annually.

  • Road Tax: In many municipalities, historic vehicles are exempt from road tax, leading to further savings.

  • Low Emissions Zones: Historic vehicles are usually permitted to enter most Low Emissions Zones (ZBE), which restrict access for modern vehicles.

  • ITV Tests: Historic vehicles benefit from extended intervals between ITV (Inspección Técnica de Vehículos) tests, reducing the frequency of inspections.

ITV Test Intervals

Historic vehicles are subject to different ITV test intervals based on their age:

  • Vehicles Under 40 Years Old: ITV test every 2 years

  • Vehicles Aged 40 to 45 Years: ITV test every 3 years

  • Vehicles Over 45 Years Old: ITV test every 4 years

Additionally, historic vehicles are not required to have certain modern elements if these were not part of their original design.

Driving Rules

While historic vehicles have specific advantages, they must still adhere to general driving regulations on Spanish roads. This includes maintaining valid insurance and keeping the ITV up to date. Additionally, you must follow any special rules outlined in the vehicle’s technical documentation (ficha técnica).

  • Speed Limits: Many historic vehicles have limited top speeds. Vehicles that cannot achieve 60 km/h are restricted from driving on dual carriageways and motorways.

  • Lighting: If your historic vehicle does not have lighting that meets modern regulations, it may be restricted from operating between sunset and sunrise.

Registration

The process of registering or importing a historic vehicle can be complex and time-consuming. We recommend contacting a specialized vehicle registration agency to handle the registration process efficiently and ensure all requirements are met.
